Supplemental Guidance
For example, if the MTTF for a system component is 100 days and the MTTF percentage defined by the organization is 90 percent, the manual transfer would occur after 90 days.
Practitioner Notes
Provide the ability to manually transfer processing from one component to another when administrators need to perform maintenance or respond to issues.
Example 1: Configure your load balancer to support manual drain mode. When you need to patch a server, enable drain mode — the load balancer stops sending new connections to that server and waits for existing connections to finish before taking it offline.
Example 2: Use VMware vMotion or Hyper-V Live Migration to manually move virtual machines from one host to another before performing host maintenance. Users experience no downtime during the migration.
