Supplemental Guidance
Failing to disable or remove collaborative computing devices and applications from systems or system components can result in compromises of information, including eavesdropping on conversations. A Sensitive Compartmented Information Facility (SCIF) is an example of a secure work area.
Practitioner Notes
In areas where classified or highly sensitive work is performed, collaborative computing devices with cameras and microphones must be physically removed or disabled.
Example 1: In SCIFs or secure work areas, remove all devices with cameras and microphones — no webcams, no smart speakers, no personal phones. Use desktop computers without built-in cameras and with microphone jacks physically disabled or removed.
Example 2: For classified conference rooms, use hardened communication equipment that has been inspected and approved by your security office. Regular commercial video conferencing equipment is prohibited. Post signs reminding personnel to leave personal electronic devices outside.
