Supplemental Guidance
Failing to disconnect from collaborative computing devices can result in subsequent compromises of organizational information. Providing easy methods to disconnect from such devices after a collaborative computing session ensures that participants carry out the disconnect activity without having to go through complex and tedious procedures. Disconnect from collaborative computing devices can be manual or automatic.
Practitioner Notes
Collaborative computing devices must have the ability to be physically or logically disconnected — not just muted or paused, but truly cut off from capturing audio or video.
Example 1: Choose conference room systems that have a hardware disconnect switch for cameras and microphones. The switch physically breaks the circuit — software cannot override it. Verify this during procurement.
Example 2: For laptops, use device manager policies via GPO to disable webcam and microphone device drivers when not needed. The devices show as disabled in Device Manager and cannot capture data until an admin re-enables them.
