Supplemental Guidance
Automatic voltage controls can monitor and control voltage. Such controls include voltage regulators, voltage conditioners, and voltage stabilizers.
Practitioner Notes
Automatic voltage controls protect your equipment from power surges, sags, and fluctuations that can damage sensitive electronics or cause unexpected shutdowns.
Example 1: Install UPS (uninterruptible power supply) units with automatic voltage regulation (AVR) for all critical IT equipment. Size UPS units to provide at least 15 minutes of runtime for graceful shutdown. Use enterprise UPS brands like APC, Eaton, or Vertiv.
Example 2: Install surge protectors on all power circuits feeding IT equipment. For large installations, use a power distribution unit (PDU) with built-in voltage regulation and surge protection. Monitor power quality using the UPS management software and set alerts for voltage events.
