Supplemental Guidance

Physical intrusion alarms can be employed to alert security personnel when unauthorized access to the facility is attempted. Alarm systems work in conjunction with physical barriers, physical access control systems, and security guards by triggering a response when these other forms of security have been compromised or breached. Physical intrusion alarms can include different types of sensor devices, such as motion sensors, contact sensors, and broken glass sensors. Surveillance equipment includes video cameras installed at strategic locations throughout the facility.

Practitioner Notes

This enhancement requires intrusion alarms and surveillance equipment to monitor physical access. You need systems that can detect unauthorized entry attempts and record who enters and when.

Example 1: Install intrusion detection sensors (door contacts, motion detectors, glass break sensors) on all entry points and sensitive areas. Connect them to a monitored alarm system that alerts your security company and local law enforcement when triggered after hours.

Example 2: Deploy IP-based surveillance cameras with motion-triggered recording and alerts. Use a video management system (VMS) like Milestone, Genetec, or even a NVR appliance to manage cameras. Configure alerts for motion in restricted areas after business hours and send notifications to security staff.
