Supplemental Guidance
Organizations can identify specific personnel, roles, and emergency responders if individuals on the notification list need to have appropriate access authorizations and/or clearances (e.g., to enter to facilities where access is restricted due to the impact level or classification of information within the facility). Notification mechanisms may require independent energy sources to ensure that the notification capability is not adversely affected by the fire.
Practitioner Notes
Fire suppression systems must activate automatically when fire is detected and notify the right people. This includes sprinklers for general areas and clean-agent systems for IT equipment areas.
Example 1: Install a pre-action sprinkler system in the server room (requires both smoke detection and sprinkler head activation to release water, reducing accidental discharge risk). For the rest of the facility, wet-pipe sprinklers per NFPA 13 standards are standard.
Example 2: Configure your clean-agent suppression system to send automated alerts to your fire alarm monitoring service and your IT team when it activates. Include a pre-discharge alarm (audible and visual) that gives personnel time to evacuate before agent release. Test annually per NFPA 2001.
