Practitioner Notes
Emergency shutoff controls need protection against accidental or unauthorized activation. An accidental EPO press can cause more damage than the emergency it was designed to prevent.
Example 1: Install protective covers (flip covers or recessed mounting) on all EPO buttons. Require a deliberate two-step action to activate — lift cover, then press button. This prevents accidental activation from someone brushing against or leaning on the switch.
Example 2: Position EPO buttons away from high-traffic walkways and door frames where they might be accidentally hit. Clearly label them with 'EMERGENCY POWER OFF — DO NOT ACTIVATE UNLESS EMERGENCY' signage. Include accidental EPO prevention in your facility orientation for new employees and visitors.
