Adware
Adware is software that displays unwanted advertisements on your computer, often installed without full user awareness alongside other software. While not always malicious, adware can track browsing habits, slow system performance, and serve as a vector for more serious malware by displaying malicious ads.
Adware on business systems is a security concern because it indicates a lack of software control — unauthorized software was installed on the system. It may also collect and transmit data about system usage, potentially exposing sensitive information about your work activities.
Why It Matters
Adware on CUI systems indicates gaps in software installation controls — a CMMC requirement. Preventing unauthorized software installation through application whitelisting or strict software policies eliminates adware and the broader risks it represents.
